Xan - Tam


Xan Colman is a Melbourne based writer and director, who holds honours degrees in Arts and Law,
as well as Diplomas in Creative Writing and French. Many of my his solo and collaborative stageplays
have been produced, including the acclaimed Hand-Holding series, Hopscotch, Zirkus Dresden,
Lucky Lucky Lucky – The Australian Fairytale Project and the short play Plum, for which he won
the national Glen Eira Literary Awards Short Stage Play Award in 2003. His directing credits include
festival productions across Australia and in Germany. In 2006, Xan co-founded A is for Atlas with
a goal of expanding the purview of creative practice through inter-artform collaboration, and at
the same time shifting the goal posts towards new arts audiences.


Xan’s recent practice highlights include I Start Again (2006, A is for Atlas) – an inter-artform theatrical
installation celebrating 100 years of Samuel Beckett and Dmitry Shostakovich;
and Blue Views - an inter-artform investigation of the use of colour as a means of cultural construction
and social power (funded in 2006 by the City of Melbourne). Recent honours include:
Best Independent Theatre Company Award – Short and Sweet Festival Melbourne (2006, A is for Atlas);
People’s Choice Award for best production – Short & Sweet Festival Melbourne
(2005, for direction of Cross Purposes); and Special Commendation Award – Melbourne Fringe Festival
(2004, for direction of Empire, Theatre in Decay).






Tamara Searle works across theatre, film and television as an actor, director, and educator.
She originally trained at the Australian Ballet School as a dancer and performed with
the Australian Ballet in productions of Manon, Don Quixote, Giselle and contemporary works.
Subsequently she trained at St Martins Theatre and the National Theatre Drama School and
with independent practitioners Ashley Wain, Kenneth Ransom and Barry Laing. Tamara appeared
in the Channel 7 Telemovie Stiff opposite David Wenham and Channel 10 Working Dog Telemovie
Russell Coight’s Celebrity Challenge. In 2005 she worked on feature film The Book of Revelation
directed by Ana Kokkinos.

In 2003 Tamara directed the award winning production Wanderlust at the Melbourne fringe Festival
which was remounted at the Malthouse in 2004. Most recently, she appeared in the award winning
production Cross Purposes at the Victorian Arts Centre, Still a Hero at La Mama, and as Perdita
in Eleventh Hour Theatre’s production of A Winter’s Tale. Tamara is a sessional lecturer in performing arts
at Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga) and Swinburne University.


Xan and Tamara are currently working with Makhampom as the recipients of a 2007 Asialink Performing Arts

Residency (supported by the Australia Council for the Arts).
