HD-TV spot for the launch of Audi TT in Australia

Viral / HD-TV spot for the launch of Audi TT in Australia. The TT contour is revealed only by the streamlines, a minimal abstraction of car laboratory scientific imaging. We created a software-based realtime wind tunnel to generate the HD video, an interactive wind-tunnel is currently in development. Concept and Art Direction by Matt Pyke, programming by Karsten Schmidt. Commissioned by The One Centre. I really like the style and the animation.

Android or Humanoid Robots

Androids
Android or Humanoid Robots are the kind of robots that most people associate with the term "robot". They are biped walking robots, which resemble more or less a human body structure. Unlike 6-legged robots, biped robots have to maintain balance during walking, which can be a major task depending on their weight distribution and foot size relative to the rest of the body. For details see the book "Embedded Robotics".
The mechanics and sensor electronics has been individually constructed around the EyeBot controller. All robots are about 50cm tall and use different sensors for attitude control and balance.

The Andy Droid robots have been designed by Joker Robotics, however, we have modified Andy1's feet with three toes containing strain gauges as the robot's main orientation sensors. With these, Andy can always determine the center of pressure in each foot and therefore knows its "zero moment point" (ZMP), which allows it to counteract any rotational forces for balancing. Andy2 has an almost identical leg design. Andy2 uses a new digital servo development instead of Andy1's conventional analog servos. These digital servos give feedback via a serial interface and can therefore double as actuators and sensors.
Andy Droid (by Joker Robotics, EyeBot, 13 servos, 5 per leg, 1 per arm [not shown], 1 for head [not shown], 3 strain gauges per foot, 2001)
Andy Droid 2 (by Joker Robotics, EyeBot, 17 digital servos, 5 per leg, 3 per arm, 1 for head, digital servo feedback, 2005)
Rock Steady
With Rock Steady we tried a completely different approach to our first robots Johnny and Jack (see below). This robot should use a minimal number of motors: one motor per leg, plus one motor for sideways balancing of a counterweight. A sophisticated mechanical structure translates the rotaty motion of each leg motor into an articulated leg motion. Instead of servos, we used precision DC motors with encoders for this robot. Inclinometers in two axes are used as orientation sensors for the robot, each motor has an incremental encoder plus an external zero position optical switch.

Johnny and Jack were the first two android robots we designed using relatively inexpensive servos as actuators and testing a variety of different sensors. A major problem with these robots are the total weight of the mechanics, electronics, motors and batteries, and the rather limited torque being supplied by the motors. Any biped robot that has difficulties balancing on one leg, will have difficulties to perform a proper walk.
Another major problem is repeatability of a motion. The robots' metal frame structure is quite flexible and tends to swing. Also, the inexpensive servos used have a considerable play and are not capable of an accurate motion repeat. Furthermore, servo performance significantly decreases with ageing of the servos.

Jack Daniels (EyeBot, QuickCam, 9 servos, spring-loaded ankles, accelerometer, infrared-sensors, 1998)

The Android By Johnnie Walker

Behind The Scene The Android

Johnnie Walker’s latest television commercial comes from the future through the perspective of an android. The 60 second Scotch whisky TV advertisement, “Human”, provides an ambience consistent with that of Isaac Asimov’s story Bicentennial Man, directed as a film by Steven Spielberg, and Stanley Kubrick’s A.I.

An android (played by Aaron Cash) sits in a library of the future saying, “I am faster than you, stronger than you. Certainly I will last much longer than you. You may think that I am the future. But you’re wrong. You are. If I had a wish, I wish to be human”.

Outside now, the android turns in the sunlight. “To know how it feels to feel”. The android grabs a butterfly in his hand, then releases it.
Back in the library the butterfly provides a point of continuity for the soliloquy. “To hope, to despair, to wonder, to love. I can achieve immortality by not wearing out. You can achieve immortality simply by doing one great thing.

The Johnnie Walker Human ad was developed at Bartle Bogle Hegarty, London, by chairman and worldwide creative director John Hegarty, copywriter and art director Justin Moore and Steve Robertson, with producer Kristin Armstrong.

Filming was directed by Dante Ariola, with MJZ, with producer Debbie Turner. Editing was done by Andrea McArthur at Peepshow, London.

Post production was done at The Mill, London, with producer Helen Hughes, Lead Flame Chris Knight, Lead 3D producer Gil James, Lead 3D Supervisor Russell Tickner. Flame artists were Richard Roberts, Coory Brown, Dave Birkhill. Flame Assists were Mark Payne, Stirling Archibald and Sheldon Gardener. 3D artists were Christ Rabbet, Eva Kuehlmann, Daniel Hope and Vincent Baartsoen. The Mill’s new podcast channel includes a video showing behind-the-scenes development of the visual effects.

Original music was composed by Peter Challis, Marc Teitler and Bernd Würtz at A-Bomb, London.

Added: October 19, 2006
Really cool ad featuring the musings of a highly intelligent android who wants to have human beings' innate drive and creativity that cannot be manufactured. It's an antidote to the prevailing idea that the future will be dominated by technology and run by machines. This film uses the Johnnie Walker idea of 'Keep Walking' as an opportunity to celebrate human potential. With such a thought-provoking creative idea, it really challenges the viewer. Could it even be considered one of the most intelligent ads ever made?

BBDO Shanghai team wins LongXi Nova Awards

LongXi Awards, the only Chinese-language creative awards included in both the GUNN Report and Shots Grand Prix, successfully held its first LongXi Nova Awards from July 5 to 7, 2007 at School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The LongXi Nova Awards aims to encourage the up-and-coming creative stars in the Chinese-language communities and offer them a direct chance to earn a winning place on the LongXi stage. The winning campaign was developed by Mr Adam Ding and Ms Jiang Pan from BBDO Shanghai, with JWT Beijing a close runner-up and David Advertising Taiwan the second runner-up. Besides, Leo Burnett Shanghai has been selected by net users as their most favorite team. The first LongXi Nova Awards held in Hong Kong was attended by twenty young creatives from Greater China Region including three art director/writer teams from Hong Kong, four teams from Shanghai, two teams from Beijing and one team from Taiwan. Publicis China CEO Ms Sheena Jeng chaired the LongXi Nova Awards. The judging panel included Mr Spencer Wong – ECD, McCann Erickson Guangming Hong Kong, Mr Norman Tan – Regional ECD, Bates Shanghai, Mr K.C. Tsang - Director, Chan Tsang Wong Chu & Mee Advertising Hong Kong, Mr Peter Soh - Chief Creative Director, Saatchi and Saatchi Greater China, Mr Tomaz Mok - EVP/ Director of Professional Services, McCann Erickson China, and Mr Milker Ho - Creative Director, Leo Burnett Hong Kong.According to Mr Jimmy Lam, one of the four founders of LongXi Awards, the objective of holding the LongXi Nova Awards is to offer rising creative stars the chance to show their creativity and let them learn from experienced and award-winning creative gurus. It also aims to nurture the new generation for the Chinese-creative industry. In this year's competition, the ten young creative teams were told to develop a crossover campaign for both Cathay Pacific and Tetra Pak. They were told to produce a campaign by using outdoor and two more advertising platforms in order to answer the brief. As part of the exercise, each team was required to stay at the student quarters of Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus to develop their campaign. In July 5, the participants were given a work assignment in the evening and then they could started developing creative ideas and strategies in the whole night in a bid to prepare for giving a five-minute presentation in the coming day. In July 6, the teams delivered their presentation and received comments from the judges in order to improve their executions. In July 7, each creative team gave their final presentation in the morning. Judges selected three teams for the last round of the competition, which was held in the afternoon. The three selected teams presented their ideas on the stage in front of all the judges, sponsors and guests in the afternoon. Finally, BBDO Shanghai team outgunned other competitors to win the LongXi Nova Awards.Ms Sheena Jeng said she was impressed by the campaigns the ten teams developed. “They have been trying to show their creativity. I believe this experience would be a very good learning opportunity as the young creatives can learn from the seven experienced creative directors and get comments from them directly.”Mr Jimmy Lam added: “As the first ever awards from LongXi aiming to embrace young creatives, we have gained lots of inputs from the participating young creatives, judges, sponsors, media and friends from the ad industry who attended the half day seminar and live presentation on last Saturday afternoon at Hong Kong PolyU. This will help us to uplift LongXi Nova.”This year's LongXi Nova Awards was sponsored by Cathay Pacific, Tetra Pak, Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design, Tom Outdoor, Corbis and DDB.

SURPRISE THE KIDS WITH BEEF TONIGHT

BMF Sydney and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) are encouraging mums and dads to ‘surprise the kids with beef tonight’ launching a major new advertising and promotional campaign for Australian beef.
The message is simple: kids love beef, and even better, it’s a valuable source of the iron they need.
Says Warren Brown, Executive Creative Director of BMF: “The ad shows how kids can have very strong, different views on what they like, but one thing they agree on is that beef meals like Bolognaise and Meatballs are firm favourites”.
The TVC was shot ‘ad-lib’ – the kids were not given a script but rather spoke naturally about the things they love, including beef.
The TVC campaign will launch this Sunday 4th March nationally, supported by a large scale point-of-sale campaign in butchers and supermarkets with the message ‘surprise the kids with beef tonight’ in bright, colourful party themes. To help parents with meal recipes for those favourtie kid dishes, a second, larger 12-page edition of Entice magazine has been produced to be distributed exclusively through butchers.

180 LAUNCH 2007 INTERNATIONAL ADIDAS CAMPAIGN

180 LAUNCH 2007 INTERNATIONAL ADIDAS CAMPAIGN

The world's most inspiring athletes tell their ‘Impossible’ stories using their own hand drawn illustrations and paintings in a new global multi-disciplinary campaign from adidas via agency 180 Amsterdam.
“We are all immensely proud of the campaign. I think the entire team have managed to encapsulate an honesty and truth that isn’t normally found in the business. Wouldn’t it be amazing if all advertising could be this inspiring and meaningful?” said Aussie expat Richard Bullock, Executive Creative Director, 180 Amsterdam.
More than 30 inspirational stories are told using the athletes’ own personal visual style. Each athlete chose a defining moment in their life and set about the task of creating the images and words which would later be combined to create the adidas ‘Impossible is Nothing’ 07 brand campaign.
The unique content was created by inviting the athletes to spend time in a purpose built art studio which allowed the athlete to choose how and with what materials they would like to express their story. This created a wealth of material which was then used to create commercial films, posters, books, documentaries, exhibitions and even clothing designs.
Highlights from the new campaign include David Beckham telling how he braved death threats from fans after the World Cup in 1998. All Blacks rugby legend Jonah Lomu talks about the challenges he faced when told of the possibility of spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair. And US basketball star Gilbert Arenas explains the reason he wears the number 0 on his shirt.
“The athletes were incredibly open and honest. It seemed that by doing something they wouldn’t normally do, the barriers came down. As a result, the work is wonderfully naïve. And some of it is equally quite beautiful. Most of them even surprised themselves," said Sean Thompson - Creative Director/Director, 180 Amsterdam.
180 worked closely with Passion Pictures on the project and the 180 creative directors Dean Maryon and Sean Thompson shared the role as directors. The Pulitzer Prize winning photographer David Turnley of Orchard by Getty Images used his photojournalistic style to create the strong photographic component to the campaign.

The thing I hate most about advertising is...

Banksy is perhaps the world's most famous and notorious (He's wanted in two countries) graffiti artist.

Audi TV ad and AdGoodness top ads of 2006

Frederick Samuel runs an amazing advertising/design blog called Advertising Design/Goodness and he had a top work of 2006 section. It's rather inspiring and neat to notice the outstanding work. However, it appears that some of the work is meant for awards shows and not for actual use. What I mean by that is how many times do you see those award-winning ads actually appear in Time, CNN, ABC, and other mainstream media venues? Also, some creative directors don't want to see students with "Lurzer-Archive" type ads in their books but then the "almighty" awards shows reward those type of ads. So what's a jr. creative to do?Here is a foreign Audi ad I saw from El Mallat shift's blog linked to that post. I found it to be very, let's just say different, than the usual American automobile advertising

Why are TV Commercials are More Expensive?

Why are TV Commercials are More Expensive?
A location that cost $400 per day in the movies cost $600 in commercials. A location manager that has been looking for locations for 20 years in feature films charges double on a TV commercial. An extra in the Philippines cost $5. He walks in at a TV Commercial set and he gets $30. Same amount of work. Same location. Why the difference? For some reason ,location owners, PMs ,etc. all say-Well, commercials have bigger budgets. Bigger budgets?Nothing has changed but the cost is more. In my experience ,advertising people are more picky but also more organized. They carefully choose who will be part of the cast, which location the shoot will be held at. They shoot at a place and leave making sure that everything is left exactly how it was found ,even cleaner- but why is everyone charging more once they know it's a TV commercial?

I wonder.

What the Young Lotus are up to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Leyon Rajaratne Group Creative Director - TBWA\TAL How's life treating you after Young Lotus?Life is something I always enjoy living, and life has always been good to me. I must say I didn't experience a life change after attending Young Lotus. But it opens my eyes to the lives of others. Did Young Lotus help sharpen your creativity/ skills? It definitely did, if any one says “No” that definitely be somebody outside the industry. We (creative people) are a very funny bunch of people. Satisfaction comes to us in form of ads. So Young Lotus definitely helped us improve what we love doing. How has the AdFest trip affected your career? Our industry (except for a very few) doesn't put much financial muscle behind training, Some of us are lucky because we have got training in our agencies. But the training we received at Pattaya was of something new, and I'm proud to be one of the two first people who got that exposure. So I can say YES the Adfest trip pushed my carrier few more kootchars higher.Did attending Young Lotus change the way 'you' think?Yes, It told me to push my boundaries, think bigger, simpler and most importantly by competing with 9 other countries it gave me the confidence to compete at an international level than thinking only about local competition.

OGILVY SINGAPORE KNOCKED OFF TOP POSITION IN THE CAMPAIGN BRIEF ASIA CREATIVE RANKINGS

OGILVY SINGAPORE KNOCKED OFF TOP POSITION IN THE CAMPAIGN BRIEF ASIA CREATIVE RANKINGS

The latest issue of Campaign Brief Asia is in the mail tomorrow and it contains a 36 page rundown on the annual Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings. There are some big changes this year with O&M Singapore beaten to top position in Asia for the first time in five years. Despite a very good year at award shows O&M Singapore were beaten by both Creative Juice\G1 Bangkok and Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore – both of whom had excellent years. The new top creative dog in Asia is Creative Juice\G1. Part of the TBWA network, Creative Juice\G1 narrowly edged out Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore for #1. It is a double celebration for the agency with ECD Thirasak Thanapatanakul (pictured) named the #1 creative in Asia for 2006. Our list of Top Award Winning Creatives in Asia ranks 1050 different names from 158 different agencies in Asia.In our Agency Network Creative Ranking it was another huge performance from Ogilvy & Mather. Ogilvy completely dominates this rankings table and actually increased their lead in Asia by around 15%. They are about 40% in front of new #2 network, JWT – the big improvers in the Creative Rankings. JWT jumped four places up the table to leap frog the likes of BBDO, Leo Burnett, TBWA and Saatchi & Saatchi.Over the 36 pages of coverage is: a full ranking of the top 158 agencies; a ranking of the top 1050 creatives; a ranking of the top 20 networks; Country rankings of agencies and creatives for Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, India, China, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia; Plus analysis of who's hot and who's not.Definitely an issue not to be missed.

JWT BRINGS BACK MARCHING TROUPE FOR VEGEMITE

JWT BRINGS BACK MARCHING TROUPE FOR VEGEMITE

In 1956 JWT first invented the ‘Happy Little Vegemites’. Now fifty-one years later, the manic marching troupe makes a comeback to our television screens in a tv spot via JWT Melbourne.
This time however, they appear as though they’ve jumped out of a 50’s television screen and into our modern world.
In the commercial a young boy struggles with homework at his desk. His imagination conjures up the ‘Happy Little Vegemites’ band from the original 1956 Vegemite commercial.
They march through his bedroom door to give him some help and advice. Inspired, he finishes his schoolwork and runs outside to play.
Josh Baker from Sydney Film was chosen for his observational direction and excellent reputation with effects.
The campaign, which launched last night (Sunday 18th March) is backed up with outdoor and instore posters.

BONDS CHANGES TACK IN NEW WORK FOR HIPSTERS AND HOODIES VIA THE PALACE

BONDS CHANGES TACK IN NEW WORK FOR HIPSTERS AND HOODIES VIA THE PALACE

Bonds has launched a major media drive to support its new range of Hoodies and Hipster Lites.
The campaign, which signals a new strategic direction for the brand, is the first work from The Campaign Palace, Sydney following their successful retention of the Bonds account late last year.
Hoodies and Hipster Lites are supported with new TVC’s, extensive outdoor and POS.
The Campaign Palace, Sydney creative director Georgia Arnott said the Hoodies TV execution neatly captured the notion of creating your personal space: “Depending on where you are in life, you use that personal space differently. There is an energy and excitement as we see two young people running, yet we’re not sure where they’re going. It’s not until we reach the end of the ad that we see their destination was each other. And the Hoodie gives them the personal space to share an intimate moment.”

COUNTDOWN TO EARTH HOUR, 7.30pm (EST), SATURDAY 31 MARCH

COUNTDOWN TO EARTH HOUR, 7.30pm (EST), SATURDAY 31 MARCH

The Issue
Climate change is the most significant threat to life on Earth. One way to slow the current rate of global warming is to get each individual to make small adjustments to the way they live. To achieve individual change we need to demonstrate how simple and easy the changes are.

The solution
An event that gets full community involvement in a simple action that will make a difference. WWF-Australia and Fairfax invite all Sydney households and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour at 7.30pm on 31st March 2007 – this is Earth Hour.

Earth Hour has the full support of the Premier of NSW, the Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney, and all city and emergency services.

The Objectives
- Get as many individuals, households and businesses as possible to turn off their lights as a symbolic statement about the greatest contributor to climate change (coal-fired electricity)
- Educate the community on the threat of global warming and what each individual can do to make a difference in their day-to-day activities to reduce their emissions
- Get corporate participants to communicate Earth Hour through internal and external channels and commit to turn off their lights on the night
- Provide precedent for an annual event and seek involvement from other cities across Australia and around the world
- Measure the change in Sydney’s greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for a 5% reduction in the year following Earth Hour.

The Message
Commercial Sector
If Australia’s commercial sector turned off lights when buildings weren’t in use and combined this action with other cost effective technology they could reduce lighting emissions by 70%, this would save 2-4 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Earth Hour aims to show these companies how easy and cost efficient these changes can be through case studies of companies that have already achieved massive reductions in their emissions. Earth Hour is working with 3CBDs, a City of Sydney initiative which aims to reduce the climate change impact of office buildings.

Households
We want each individual to understand that electricity consumption is a direct contributor to global warming and that small actions by every individual can make a big difference. When households sign up to take part in Earth Hour they will receive a pack with all the information and tools they need to cut their emissions (and their energy bill).
If all Australian households simply turned off unused lighting and appliances on standby at the power point it would reduce Australia’s emissions by at least 5 million tonnes per annum.

The Facts
- 69% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions come from energy production (CSIRO)
- October 2006 was by far the hottest October on record for NSW with the state wide average maximum temperature more than 3.2ºC above the historical average of 24.4ºC (records since 1950). Australian Government- Bureau of Meteorology
- By 2100, up to 15,000 Australians could die every year from heat-related illnesses and the dengue transmission zone could reach as far south as Brisbane and Sydney if we continue to allow [greenhouse gas] emissions to increase. (Australian Medical Association).
