D-20 Images from Cine Gear Master Class

D-20 Images from Cine Gear Master Class
These images are taken from material shot at the Cine Gear Camera Master Class held on Sunday June 5th at Mole Richardson Studio, LA, under the direction of Bill Bennett, ASC, with lighting by Russell Carpenter, ASC.
The ARRIFLEX D-20 camera used is one of the Pre Production Units currently being tested by cinematographers in various locations and was set up in HD mode with a LUT to provide the maximum sensitivity presently available (approximately equivalent to 400 ISO film stock). The white balance was a standard tungsten setting and the material was recorded to a Sony HDCAM SR portable recorder (model SRW-1) in 4:4:4 RGB SQ mode at 23.976 frames per second. The camera used a 180 degree setting for its mechanical shutter and monitoring was provided in both 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 during shooting. The exposure was set by Russell Carpenter using his light meter, except in the case of the candlelight scene where the level was too low to register, and confirmed with an HD waveform monitor. The lenses used were 40mm and 100mm T1.3 Master Primes. The images have been graded using primary correction in a Lustre to provide pleasing flesh tones. A full report on the Master Class can be found in the ARRI Email Newsletter.

Notes on viewing conditions:
If you view these images in a professional post production house you should know that these images were graded on a digital projector that was calibrated to a white point of 6500 K and a maximum luminance of 47 cd/m2. The projector was set up for ITU-R BT.709 images with a gamma of 2.2.
If you do not view these images in a professional post production house, results will vary widely depending on what hardware you use and how you have set up your monitor. If you have such a setting, set your monitor to 6500 K. To ensure that the dark parts of the image are displayed properly in your viewing conditions, you can use the Pluge test chart. Display the Pluge chart on your monitor and push up the contrast setting to the maximum level. Then adjust the brightness so that the left black bar just disappear in the blacks. Setting your monitor up to color bars also always helps.
