Google's Chrome Shines in Blogosphere
Data-Blocking Changes to Microsoft's IE May Have Fueled Search Giant's Effort to Launch Its Own Browser
By Abbey Klaassen
Published: September 02, 2008
Google yesterday introduced its free web browser, Chrome, which launches a Windows version in beta today, via its company blog. (The news leaked when Google prematurely -- and accidentally -- sent a comic book it had commissioned to introduce the browser.)
Already, the browser is creating a frenzy among tech bloggers.
What the blogers say
Nick Carr, author of "The Big Switch," sees Chrome as an integral component of a "cloud-computing" future. "To Google, the browser has become a weak link in the cloud system -- the needle's eye through which the outputs of the company's massive data centers usually have to pass to reach the user -- and as a result the browser has to be rethought, revamped, retooled, modernized," he writes. Om Malik, meanwhile, believes it's an important move to create a seamless desktop-to-mobile browser, something the existing players have yet to create. And John Furrier contends the search war is turning into an operating-system war, with the browser as an important move to maintain Google's "hooks" onto the desktop.

But it's also likely Google was worried about the latest iteration of Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer, which is the clear leader in the browser space with 72.2% penetration, according to Net Applications. (Mozilla's Firefox is second with 19.7%.)
As Ad Age wrote last week, this latest Internet Explorer has the ad world in a tizzy over an option to surf "in private." Surfing in this mode is not the default setting but should many consumers choose it so, it could block advertisers from collecting the browsing data they use to help target ads and glean data about what ads were shown when.
Enhancing Google's business model
Google's entire business model is based on advertising and data, and branching out into more display-advertising business is integral to its growth. But data is essential to compete in display, and that data is gleaned through third-party ad tracking: Google's $3.1 billion purchase of DoubleClick, which serves up online display ads, lays the ground for a robust display-ad-targeting business.
Google, for its part, talks up the browser's simplicity and streamlined user interface and its ability to run robust web apps.
"We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser," wrote Google's Sundar Pichai, VP-product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director. "What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build."

What Top Creative Minds Are Doing With Their New Websites
What Top Creative Minds Are Doing With Their New Websites
Five Shops Share Their Design and Content Imperatives
By Teressa Iezzi
Published: April 28, 2008
Looking to redesign your website?
Well, what could be more instructive than examining the newly redesigned sites of a handful of brand creativity companies -- companies whose very purpose is to communicate effectively (online or anywhere) and who, theoretically, have the best talent and the best ideas on such matters. During the last month or so, a handful of shops launched big, notable sites. I asked the sites' framers about their priorities and design and content imperatives. Here, the sites' framers provide some insight on their priorities and design and content imperatives. Given the wide range of approaches embodied in these sites, the first bit of perspective they provide is to reinforce how well you need to know who you are and what you want to say to the world in undertaking this or any branding exercise. Hal Riney & Partners came out bold with the "Minority Report"-ish navigation on its new online identity, launched in mid March. Visitors to the site (created with U.K.-based Clusta) are met with a floating cloud of red ink. The web-cam-enabled may move through the site using hand gestures. It's a compelling window to where this technology will lead, though the site content is pretty straightforward. What they were thinking: "Riney has been an institution, steeped in tradition and a rich history of creativity," says Chief Creative Officer Roger Camp. "But for all of its storied past, it had become aged. So the charge was to shed the perceptual baggage of the Riney of old but retain its soul of innovation." Equally dramatic in a dramatically different way:
Modernista's we-are-the-web site. To the extent that explaining it in words has any point, visitors to the site are taken to outside web pages (Google, Facebook, Wikipedia -- which has added a disclaimer about the site) overlaid with a small red menu. As the agency has explained, the menu doesn't live in the site, it is the site. What they were thinking: "We wanted to rethink what it means to be a brand in 2008," says agency co-founder and Executive Creative Director Gary Koepke. "We thought it would be interesting to embrace the participatory culture of the web and ultimately learn from that to be able to make better recommendations for our clients." He goes on to add: "In this space, the guiding principals already exist -- they are the norms of the communities themselves. We just needed to figure out how to express Modernista within those communities. The site has inspired a lot of conversation and we are happy to be a part of that conversation. We are eager to see where this idea leads us." Grey got in on the action a few weeks back with its own revamped site, hosted by a trio of animated characters. The site features lots of work case studies and an unusual one-take video of Grey Group Chairman-CEO Jim Heekin expounding on the new Grey from the empty Toy Building space that will be the agency's future home. The site is serviceable but, particularly with the somewhat arbitrary addition of the characters, maybe feels a bit 2004. What they were thinking: "We wanted to give users a real sense of the new dynamism and creative energy at Grey ... engage all our audiences, introduce the 'new' Grey, provide immediate access to our people and resources and begin to build relationships using the site as a vehicle for ongoing dialogue," says Heekin. "We employed a design and navigational simplicity to make the site fun and easy to use." R/GA weighed in with a Flashtastic site earlier this month. It's clean and crisp and incorporates a ton of video -- mostly devoted to the agency's work. The site is in an early phase -- the agency will add more video of its people talking about things like data and universal planning and explaining capabilities and philosophies. What they were thinking: "We've always specialized in very-well-designed, complex communications capabilities on the web for clients," says R/GA Chairman-CEO and Global Chief Creative Officer Bob Greenberg. "IBM.com might be 8 million pages deep, but you're always just a few clicks away from anything. That's more informational. You also have to be experiential -- we wanted it to be a consistent experience. What you don't see is the architecture that you can hang additional capabilities on -- you have to plan for releases that are coming out over the next several years, the way it ties into mobile, all the different parts and pieces." Regarding the design: "We don't have anything tricky on our site -- that's conscious. People know how to navigate our site."
The Barbarian Group launched its site earlier this month (after being shadowed online by the mysterious Bavarian Group). The Barbarians, masters of the gee-whiz web experience, zagged nicely with a bloggy, un-Flashy site that captures the shop's personality while serving up all the information one could ever need on its work and people -- as well as opinions on all things creative, including lunch. Beyond being a highly usable source of Barbarian insight, the site feels like one you might choose to visit when it isn't a school day. What they were thinking: "We had four or five things we really needed to accomplish with our new site," says co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Rick Webb. Those included conveying the group's perhaps hard-to-define identity in the industry -- "to show that we're so much more than a production house," says Webb. They also had to show "all of the work. The Flash, the technical, the strategic, the creative. Next, we wanted to highlight the breadth and depth of the talent and thinking here, to show people how the company is so much more than just Benjamin and me. Next, we absolutely needed to showcase and drive home the fact that we are not just unafraid of the internet, but that we can execute just about anything on it. It's a huge point of differentiation for us, and it needed to show. Finally, we needed a place to house all the common questions that people ask us. Our business is a lot different than the traditional advertising business: We get basic questions all the time like 'How do you guys work with us,' and 'Do you do x?' or 'What do you guys think about social networks?'" Regarding the design, he says: "Bold, simple, informative, useful, and accommodating of massive future growth without a redesign. We also wanted to impart our attitude and tone -- fearless, a bit pedantic, and almost hopelessly humorous, right down to the Monty Python reference and Tony Wilson shout-outs on the home page. And the logo that couldn't possibly be made any bigger."

Special Thank For Link : http://advertising.microsoft.com/asia/Home/Article.aspx?pageid=&Adv_ArticleID=6196

How Are We Going to Solve Communication Chaos?
How Are We Going to Solve Communication Chaos?Or 'I Am a Tag, Not a Number' Revisited
Posted by Craig Daitch on 04.24.08 @ 10:45 AM
I've noticed with alarming frequency the number of conversations between friends and colleagues that start with "I was trying to get a hold of you yesterday..."
All of these conversations stem from one symptom: Communication Chaos.
The impact of Communication Chaos can be felt ubiquitously. From our personal relationships with family and friends, to the struggles marketing professionals feel when tasked with building relationships in this new world of ours (one with an ever-shifting target).
Communication Chaos affects the TV industry as much as it affects online. Seriously -- this goes far beyond a click, an impression or a GRP. If we can't crowd source our audience into one medium, how can we continue to market to them as if we can?
Performing a personal audit of the different channels people use to access me, I came up with the following:
1 corporate e-mail account
4 personal e-mail accounts
1 office phone
2 cellphones
7 instant-messaging accounts
4 social-networking accounts
3 blogs
1 virtual world
Although I consider myself a "power user," I know for certain I'm not the worst offender of communication tools. So what's the solution?
In 2006, British author Tony Fish presented an idea at an event in London where he declared to his audience, "I am a tag, not a number."
He simplified his rationale anecdotally: He once had a landline phone that was his primary means to reaching out to friends. If he didn't know the number, he would take out his search directory and find it.
Fast forward years into his adulthood and his tools for communication have multiplied tenfold, as have those of his friends and colleagues. Furthermore, there wasn't Yellow Pages book or a search tool that indexed all the numbers and contact information of his acquaintances. What would happen if a friend changed phone numbers?
Tony questioned the relevance of numbers themselves and offers up a different solution:
"... A federated service provider will become the 'search engine by tags' -- searching my professional information. I will have added personal contacts for family so they are in by default (i.e. linked through me). The value proposition for the user appears when someone in your network modifies or updates the data with new details and that data automatically updates your data set, saving time and maintaining contact.
The bigger the network you have, the more frequently your information is refreshed and the more fresh and valuable it is."
As alarming as it is to sometimes think that a corporate entity, such as Google or Facebook, can accrue so much private data around their users (phone numbers, IM addresses, home addresses, emails, etc.), I think it'll take a non-municipal entity to get it right. This is less about how we monetize communication and more about building a platform to help us sift through the different means of communication.
An early and somewhat limited example of this concept is Grand Central, which aggregates all your phone numbers into a one and locates you, no matter which mobile or landline number you happen to be on or near at that time. Only with tags, we're talking about finding people by name (vs. a number) and encompassing all communications channels (not just by phone).
To bring the conversation into the future, the next great debate on privacy will stem from user control and presence information. How on or off the grid do you want to be if you knew that you could simplify the way someone reaches you through the consolidation of all of your online and offline points of access?
Making sense of Communication Chaos is no easy task but it's going to be a necessity. The long-tail of communication can cause more harm than good -- and I am interested to see how technology is used to solve it.

Just got this today and feel that it is important enough to but it on queue.Don't do anything that is without the "S"
Just got this today and feel that it is important enough to but it on queue.Don't do anything that is without the "S"
Internet Security, Extremely Important
Very IMPORTANT..must know - don't do anything that is without the " s "The main difference between http:// and https:// is It's all about keeping you secure
HTTP stands for HyperText Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients. The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS. The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure". If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://. This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site. This is why you never, ever, ever, should enter your credit card info in an http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on. You understand why this is so important, right? If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://. If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card info!
I checked the Tigerair http://www.tigerairways.com/home/
And Jetstar airways http://www.jetstar.com/3k/index.html When come to booking the ticket and keying the personal information both show https

HD-TV spot for the launch of Audi TT in Australia
Viral / HD-TV spot for the launch of Audi TT in Australia. The TT contour is revealed only by the streamlines, a minimal abstraction of car laboratory scientific imaging. We created a software-based realtime wind tunnel to generate the HD video, an interactive wind-tunnel is currently in development. Concept and Art Direction by Matt Pyke, programming by Karsten Schmidt. Commissioned by The One Centre. I really like the style and the animation.Link: http://www.universaleverything.com/recent_activity/204

YouTube problem: Letter to Hong Kong

Dear sir,
Please carefully review our problem and requirement to serve the right solution for us.
Problem:
Thailand government has banned YouTube.com since beginning of April 2007, by IP based blocking, Dropping packets to 208.65.153.251 or .253 (YouTube's addresses). So nobody in Thailand can access YouTube.com. As a film production company, we're using YouTube as our on-line show reel. We've uploaded almost 1,000 movies into YouTube website, which is only half way of the plan. We need to continue our uploading, as well as, to provide our target in Thailand to be accessable to YouTube.com.
Requirement:
We require a solution for the above. In our understanding, we may need oversea proxy server with enough bandwidth (says 10 mbps). This proxy server, with different URL, will piont to 208.65.153.251 or .253 (YouTube's addresses) with 100% interfacing. You can learn what we need by visit www.blockict.com , which is quite close to our requirement. The different is we need this proxy server to point directly to Youtube instead of filling URL, and we also need faster speed of page updating.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
