¿Quién asesinó a la idea? (creativa) : Who killed the idea? (creative) : Canneslions 2003

Satire about the different facets of creativity in a world where style is often more important than the content and form rather than function.

In these times of poverty some creative advertising in which we live every day arrives this document shows that (how creative and advertisers?) How people are struggling to defend their ideas off the attacks and try to decipher the biggest culprits of the "murder of Good ideas. "

Short of creative guru Hermann Vaske presented with great success at the Cannes Advertising Festival (edition 2003) with actors Harvey Keitel, Nadja Auermann and Debi Mazar.

Co-funded by advertisers one of the most pioneering and creative these days, the German car company BMW. Whose car BMW 5 Series leads, in return, the protagonist.

All-time favourites from Cannes Lions

All-time favourites from Cannes Lions

A pilgrimage to Cannes is high on every creative person’s wish list. But the trip has assumed ritualistic proportions for some who’ve been making the journey almost every year. BE spoke to half-a-dozen of these regulars to find out their all-time favourites from Cannes Lions.

Emmanuel Upputuru
National Creative Director, Publicis India

This is a very tough job, I have hazaar all-time favourites. But if you insist, I’d say the ‘shadow’ film for Aerolineas Argentinas, the ‘Magic happens’ film for Disney, and the Levi’s ‘watch pocket’ ad. I think the Disney ad, much like the Ikea ‘lamp’ ad, is spectacular because on paper it looks like a very simple script.

But recreating something like that and making it look realistic is incredibly hard. The ad gives me the goose bumps every time. Having been on juries over the last one-and-a-half years, I see that juries are under pressure to award work that either has a social message or is stunning in execution and effects.

Whereas these three ads are very nice, simple human stories focused on simple product propositions. The year Aerolineas Argentinas made it to Cannes, PlayStation’s ‘mountain’ film won the Grand Prix; I was very disappointed.

Rensil D’Silva
Executive Creative Director, Meridian Communications

The Aerolineas Argentinas film is the most stunning and moving piece of advertising I’ve seen at Cannes, I remember the phenomenal applause it drew during the screening. What a fantastic way of showing the power of believing in your dreams. The other is the ‘magic of giving’ film for the Peruvian Cancer Foundation.

Both ads are great pieces of magic realism, with an emotional core that transcends race and geography. Through the narration, both films create a childish sense awe and wonder, a kind of return to innocence. The fact that they stay with you long after you’ve seen them is a testament to the power of storytelling. We in India somehow seem scared of writing scripts like these.

Satbir Singh
Chief Creative Officer, Euro RSCG

There are several ads that come to mind. But I’d say the two Sony Bravia film, ‘balls’ and ‘paint’, and the series of ads for Orange which talked about how you shouldn’t let a cell phone conversation ruin movie watching were really cool. Bravia because the ads were single-minded in their intent, and had great visuals and exceedingly good music.

Also, ‘paint’ really took the campaign thought of ‘balls’ forward. Orange because it was brave for the client to take a topic which is such a raw spot for moviegoers, and handle it with such deprecating humour. But what I love best is Design Barcode, which won the Titanium Lion two years ago. The barcode is something we’ve all seen, but they turned it around beautifully. It teaches us that there is scope for creativity in everyday things staring at our faces.

Abhijit Avasthi
Executive Creative Director, O&M India

I’d put in the ‘Wassup’ campaign, the Thai Life Insurance film (‘father and son’ ) and the ‘magician’ film for the Peruvian Cancer Foundation. And the whole Honda ‘power of dreams’ campaign. All of them are very atypical of the category and nothing remotely close has been done before. Which insurance company would have the guts to talk about death and sell it like Thai Life did?

It just might be my favourite film of all time. ‘Wassup’, I dare any planner in the world to write a brief to it. Honda is more about the power of advertising than power of dreams, how it can make a fuddy-duddy brand look really cool. And many people have done films about kids losing hair because of cancer, but the Peruvian Cancer Foundation put a different spin on it.

Ravi Deshpande
Chief Creative Officer, Contract Advertising

My favourites are ‘Don’t’ for The Independent, ‘Wassup’ for Budweiser, and last year, when I was judging, the amazing spot ‘wind’ for Epuron. The Independent film had such a powerful quality: a newspaper making a statement about freedom by speaking about how life is full of ‘don’ts’. Even after a decade, I remember the visuals and imagery. It couldn’t be for anything else other than a paper. ‘Wassup’ was again an absolutely lateral thought.

Good times with friends and Bud is so memorable, and gets everyone in splits; engagement and entertainment at its maximum. In the middle of all this, the product fits in so well. The ‘wind’, I found it almost poetry; like watching Goddard’s cinema. It’s so unlike an ad that you get completely hooked in to what’s going on. What an amazing way of interpreting wind, personifying it and telling a story... it nearly won a Grand Prix.

LOOKING AHEAD TO LIONS 2008

LOOKING AHEAD TO LIONS 2008
FESTIVAL CEO Philip Thomas has announced new developments for the 2008 edition of the Festival. A new awards category, Design, will bring the number of categories to 10. "We've been talking with the industry about this issue for for some years, now is the time to recognise the fact that design is a fundamental element to all aspects of brand communication," he said.

The standing-room-only workshop programme - which this year increased from 10 to 20 - is expanding again in 2008 to include, among other possibilities, Media workshops. "The feedback has been extremely positive this year," Thomas said. "We have the world's best creative talent here every year in Cannes and that is something that all delegates should benefit from."

The 2008 Festival will also develop the new Content Showcase, on Level 01 of the Palais close to the press and exhibition areas and accessible to all 9,300 registered delegates. "As the multi-screen, multi-platform landscape evolves and brands demand ever-more distinct ways of communicating their message, so content - in all its forms - becomes ever-more important," Thomas said.

The Festival's special Student Delegates programme launched this year, attracting groups from the US, Europe and Asia. The programme offers full-time students of advertising the opportunity to participate in the Festival and attend the seminar and workshop programmes, with tutors travelling free with their groups. "With the Young Creatives delegations being such a success over the years, we think it's vital that the learnings and inspiration of Cannes is available to the next generation of talent," Thomas said. "This was the first year and it has worked well. We will ever-more students from different parts of the world next year."

Cannes Lions advertising festival to be held in Dubai

Cannes Lions advertising festival to be held in Dubai
By Gaurav Ghose, Financial Features Editor Published: March 04, 2008, 23:39
Dubai: A growing GDP and rising advertising and marketing spend in the Middle Eastern region has led to Dubai hosting its first international advertising festival presented by Cannes Lions from March 31 to April 2, it was announced on Tuesday.
The festival will incorporate the second Dubai Lynx Awards, which started last year to recognise creative talents in the Middle East and North Africa region.
"There is really an interesting progression and that progression starts with GDP growth," said Philip Thomas, chief executive of Cannes Lions.
"So the first thing an emerging nation needs is fast GDP growth, because after that comes fast advertising and marketing spend. The two things are incredibly linked and the numbers here are almost identical.
');
//-->
"What we have seen in other regions that have done this is that shortly after that they have shown world-class creativity. Thailand is a very good example. A few years ago it did not figure in Cannes and now it wins regularly.
"Dubai and the Middle East region are exactly in that position. We got the GDP growth, we got growth in advertising spend. And now more and more the work is becoming great," he said.
Dynamic market
The Cannes Lions chose Dubai as the first of its regional festivals outside Europe because of its dynamic market, Thomas added.
"The advertising market has more or less doubled in the last five years. But not only the size, also the creative work," he said.
Last year when the Dubai Lynx Awards came to the emirate for the first time, there were 1,700 entries, 1,200 visitors attended and the event was well supported by the creative industry of the region.
The big categories are print, film, outdoor and direct marketing, Thomas said.
"The percentage of entries in the interactive category which is effectively internet is relatively lower but growing year on year quite dramatically. The question is as time goes on it will grow more and more."
Besides celebrating the best works of the region and inspiring the attendees by showing the works of the winners of Cannes Lion and its European festival, an important element in this year's festival is the opportunity of learning from some of the masters, including David Droga, Steve Harrison and Piyush Pandey.

CANNES AD FESTIVAL TO EXPAND : New Marketing Services Event

CANNES AD FESTIVAL TO EXPAND

New Marketing Services Event Slated for 2002
June 26, 2001
By Laurel Wentz
CANNES (AdAge.com) -- The International Advertising Festival is planning to extend the Cannes Lion brand again by adding a marketing services event next year. The festival already consists of the original TV competition, as well as more recent press and poster, Internet and media competitions.

Yet another segment will be added to the Cannes Lions brand next year.
Romain Hatchuel, the festival's CEO, said a marketing services event would be added at the end of the already full week long advertising festival.
Like the Cyber competition slotted in two years ago and the three-year-old Media Lions, the festival is trying to tap parts of the ad industry that don't already spend money to enter or attend the festival.
Rapid GrowthSo far that strategy has worked. In its fourth year, Cyber Lion entries grew by almost 50% this year to 1,471. Media Lion entries are growing more slowly, from 502 in 2000 to 643 this year, but in just its third year, the Media Lions awards dinner drew 500 people last Wednesday night. With the new event still in the planning stages, it's unclear exactly how the festival will define marketing services.

Photo: Anthony Vagnoni..
Festival CEO Romain Hatchuel plans to make the event longer.
Agency network heads, who will determine whether whole new groups of people within their networks will join their annual Cannes contingent, would prefer to see the new event defined as integrated marketing, rather than simply adding new disciplines to the festival such as direct marketing or sales promotion.
Ingregration award?"I think it's really important to have an award for integration," said Cheryl Berman, chairman and chief creative officer of Leo Burnett North America, Chicago. "I wouldn't make it any more complicated than integrated media."
"Anything we can do to unlock from our obsession with TV would be good," said DDB CEO Keith Reinhard. "When 80% of homes have TiVo, we're going to have to reach people in all ways. Eventually -- long after I'm gone -- there will be just one award, for the most creative brand experience."
Laurel Wentz is the international editor of Advertising Age.

Blue Dragon's BIG SHADOW wins award

Blue Dragon's BIG SHADOW wins award
Posted Jun 24th 2007 4:15PM by Dustin BurgFiled under: News
Microsoft's 360 sales in Japan may be borderline sad and depressing, but at least their ad campaigns are winning awards. Blue Dragon's marketing campaign BIG SHADOW won a coveted Canneslion award for best outdoor advertisement. The BIG SHADOW campaign can be seen here and took place in Japan where they projected people's shadows on a nearby building that morph into Blue Dragon creatures. The campaign also went online featuring a live feed of the fun and interaction with the shadows. It's quite the creative experience and well worth an award. Now only if Microsoft could translate an advertising award into Xbox 360 hardware sales then we think things would be good in Japan.[Thanks Jonah Falcon, Via Joystiq]
