THE FINE ART OF ADVERTISING 07 May 2008

THE FINE ART OF ADVERTISING 07 May 2008
A new exhibition at The Chambers Gallery, London proves what many in the industry have always suspected - that advertising really is an artform.
Advertising Art will feature original photographs and artwork created for ads by some of the most high profile names in UK advertising. Among them are Sir John Hegarty; Tim Delaney; and Paul Belford and, poignantly, the late great Paul Arden, who died last month.Work by well-known photographers such as Irving Penn, Nadav Kander and Richard Avedon will be on show, including Avedon's iconic photograph of the model Iman. But, first and foremost, the show will celebrate the art of the art director - Penn's L'Oreal will line up alongside famous images for Silk Cut, Absolut Vodka, Pirelli Tyres and Boddingtons. Said curator Philip Roe: "This exhibition, the first to offer original advertising artwork for sale as fine art, will signal the end of that hoary old debate about the status of commercial art. We can see for ourselves: advertising art can be art of the highest quality."The exhibition runs from May 14 until June 14.
