Wassup08.com: Wassup : They're back.

Its been eight long years since the boys said wassup to each other. Even with the effects of a down economy and imminent change in the White House, the boys are still able to come together and stay true to what really matters.

Here is the 2008 Pro-Obama version. It makes you realize just how far down we have gone in eight years. But according to these guys, there is hope.

Wassup

Classic television ads are few and far between. And only occasionally do they blend into the politic dialect (see: “Where’s the beef?” Mondale v. Hart, 1984).

The “Wasssssup” Budweiser spots were — for avid television watchers — one of those memorable ad moments that had pop culture significance. Now, the very same characters are reprising almost identical roles in a short clip on behalf of the Obama campaign.

ABOUT : Wassup
Charles Stone III is an award winning feature film director who got his start in 1988 as an animator for New York’s Woo Art International. In the early 90’s he started directing music videos and in 1998, in the height of prosperity and opportunities during the Clinton Administration, he used the prestigious Music Video Production Association Awards to premier True, his short film shot on Video 8 on a shoestring budget and starring Charles and his friends. The film was an instant hit and became an underground sensation in the film and advertising communities.

The success of his music videos and short film opened the door to directing his first feature film, Paid in Full. Meanwhile, True was still an underground hit circulating from one person to the other on shared VHS tapes when it landed in the Chicago offices of advertising agency DDB Needham whose creative directors imagined using the film’s characters for another purpose.

In 2000, on the eve of Bush being elected, together with DDB Needham, Charles ended up creating and starring in (he’s the first guy lying on the couch) a series of Budweiser Whassup?! spots that became an international sensation and garnered the most prestigious awards including the Cannes Grand Prix, Grand Clio, Golden Pencil and Andy Award. In 2002, Paid in Full was released and later that year Charles began directing his second feature, the sleeper hit Drumline for 20th Century Fox.

The prosperity of the Clinton years was waning and the corruption and mismanagement of the Bush years was coming into focus. Luckily, Charles had already established himself as a successful director and jumped onto his next feature film Mr. 3000 for Touchstone Pictures and continued directing commercials like a Nike Air Jordan campaign introducing the NBA star Carmelo Anthony.

Looking back on the last 8 years since Whassup?! debuted, Charles realized how much our country has changed and seized on the opportunity to reunite the whole cast for a searing film on our current condition with the hope that it reminds people the importance of voting and more specifically, the importance of choosing Obama, a candidate who is a clean break from the policies that got our country in this condition in the first place.

Charles is currently in development on several feature films as well as directing episodic television and short form content for the internet.

BANGKOK DANGEROUS (2008)

I often imagine how big, Hollywood stars choose their roles. Is it the largest paycheck or the potential for prestige? Is it a passion for a genre or the strength of a script? Is it all those things or do they simply close their eyes and throw darts at a board? I’m sure the answer is complex for most stars but in the case of Nicholas Cage, starring in “Bangkok Dangerous,” I’m leaning towards the dart board theory.

Nicholas Cage stars as Joe, a globetrotting hitman who ends up in Bangkok to commit four last assassinations before he hangs up his holsters and retires. He recruits charismatic street hustler, Kong (Shahkrit Yamnarm) as a personal courier to exchange money and info with local gangster clients. Joe begins breaking his strict “no personal involvement” principle, first by mentoring Kong in assassination techniques, then by sparking an awkward romance with a local hearing-impaired pharmacist. These decisions endanger Joe’s mission, forcing him to question his morals and break his strict rules that ensure his self-preservation.

This film came about eight years too late. Adapted from a 1999 Hong Kong action film of the same name, “Bangkok Dangerous” relied on a passé genre style in an attempt to translate a modest overseas success into a Hollywood blockbuster. Producers used the same directors and inserted Nic Cage in the title role, resulting in a clichéd misfire that wouldn’t have been interesting even when this type of remake was in style nearly a decade ago. “Bangkok’s” directors, The Pang Brothers (Oxide and Danny), have yet to make a smooth transition over into Hollywood cinema. Their stateside horror effort “The Messengers” bombed. Remaking/Americanizing their old version of “Bangkok” further insinuates a lack of creativity. My advice to the Pang Brothers: Stay in Hong Kong. Enjoy your celebrity status and success there. No need to for you to get dragged through the Hollywood mud a third time.

Shahkrit Yamnarm delivers the best performance and best character in the film as Kong. He oozes a youthful charm and confidence that easily trump’s Cage’s dour and reserved Joe. He makes some foolish, yet believable decisions over the course of the story which gives him depth and a humanizing quality not found in the other characters. I was not surprised to discover later that in the original “Bangkok Dangerous,” Kong was the main character. Hollywood changed the only aspect of the original film that could have made the remake work. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Charlie Young as Cage’s attractive, deaf love interest displays some commendable acting talent, but ultimately the chemistry between the two characters comes across as creepy and unbelievable. It’s like Joe suddenly decides out of the blue that he needs a girlfriend to complete his retirement, so he picks up the first pretty face he sees. Due to the language barrier and her handicap, they can barely communicate. This makes the scenes between them excruciating to watch.

Nicholas Cage wears yet another bizarre hairpiece in this boring role and baffles again with his random choice of films. One could argue that he’s selecting vanity roles to add to his resume (I can’t recall him playing a pro hitman before). I can understand the desire of an actor to play versatile parts, but Cage has a reputation for leaping onto fad-genre films without checking the project for evidence of quality. He’s not as bad as Travolta in this transgression, but his judgment seems to get worse with age, especially considering “Ghost Rider” was arguably the worst comic book adaptation of all time. Cage continues to make poor choices by expressing a desire to do “Ghost Rider 2” set in Europe, apparently so he can get paid to fulfill a fantasy of riding a motorcycle across the continent… Please spare us, Nic. I’m not counting you out because I hear you’ve signed on to the transcendent comic book project, titled “Kick-Ass,” in a supporting role. I have high hopes for that one. Don’t disappoint me.

Hong Kong action films of the 90’s don’t translate well to this era. The violent genre arose in the late 80’s over fears of China’s impending take over of the capitalist city from Britain in 1999. Once that transition passed peacefully, fears subsided and the genre faded away. As is the custom, Hollywood often jumps on these overseas sensations a bit too late, as was the case in “Bangkok Dangerous.” If you want a fantastic and thrilling example of the genre, skip “Bangkok” and rent John Woo’s explosive 1992 hit “Hard Boiled” starring Chow Yun Fat. It’s arguably the best action film ever made and makes “Die Hard” look like “Love Story”… If that’s you’re kind of thing.

Happy memories of bygone days wash over you the moment....

A former professional photographer turns his passion for collecting into a fulltime career

Happy memories of bygone days wash over you the moment you enter the warm wooden house on Ekkamai-Ram Indra Road. It's known in the 'hood as Gao Geb and it's home to a variety of old teak furniture and an eye-catching array of collectible items, many of which date back to the 1950s.

Gao Geb's owner, photographer Suwan Pengon has a passion for old Thai-style furnishings and transformed his property into a showroom-cum-restaurant three years ago. Visitors are welcome to check out whatever catches their eye. "Everything's for sale," he grins.

Look around and you'll find a full range of Thai-style furniture including cabinets, chests of drawers, tables, chairs, sofas, armchairs and lamps.

"I started collecting antiques when I was a teenager. First I bought toys and other accessories that many people would probably think of as worthless items," says Suwan. "I'm fascinated at the gracefulness of Thai designs and they are a good way of remembering bygone days."

Other items displayed include a 60-year-old safe, an antique grandfather clock from Germany, a rare black and white camera, glass-tube televisions, gramophones, piano, radios, telephones, typewriters, irons, bicycles and handicrafts, plus a glittering showcase of rare Sangkalok pottery made in the reign of Rama V.

Suwan's also set some space aside for his collection of old Thai grocery items such as shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, action figures and toys. Automobile fans will love his old Volkswagen models. Better still, all his retro items are available for rent.

If you feel hungry, ask for the menu. Suwan also serves delectable noodles, Thai food, traditional Thai coffees and other beverages.

Diesel Flash Fiction - Idealogue and PanOptic Motion OOH

With all this business of people creating their own video content, last week Idealogue took a turn for the literary helping to launch Diesel's new fall campaign in New York. Along with New York-based nonprofit Accompanied Literary Society, founded in 2004 to reinvent the idea of the literary salon, the idea shop curated a group of celebrity authors to create "Flash Fiction" stories inspired by images from Diesel's campaign, which then became part of an installation projected for three days on the building at One York Place in New York.
